When did you decide to become a director?

Man, I’ve been making videos since I was like 7 years old, using home movie cameras, messing around with editing softwares. I didn’t start taking it serious and consider it a career until high school.

You directed the video for The Box by Roddy Ricch, which became big on TikTok. Do you sometimes browse the app for ideas?

Honestly, I don’t use TikTok for ideas. I usually only browse it when I’m bored or have time to kill, which is rare these days.

You’ve worked with Yungblud before on his video for Tongue Tied featuring Marshmello and Blackbear. Was it a different experience than shooting Strawberry Lipstick?

Yeah man, I mean they were two completely different concepts. Tongue Tied was like a narrative movie and I only got to work with Yungblud briefly because we had so much more to shoot. With Strawberry Lipstick, Yungblud and I were creatively collaborating right from the jump. Really wanted to make sure we went completely in a new direction.

What did you think about the song when you first heard it? Did you instantly have ideas for the video?

When I first heard the song, I loved it. I mean, in your face punk rock, how can you not? I had a completely different idea for the record to start. It wasn’t until him and I spoke that he told me he wanted it to be super stark white like a Terry Richardson shoot. We wanted it to be loud and edgy like moving magazine covers.

Is Terry Richardson an inspiration of yours?

Honestly, he’s not an inspiration but I definitely appreciate his art and his contributions. We went that route because Yungblud wanted to push it that direction and I was down because I had never really done anything like it. I love pushing myself out of my comfort zone.

Who came up with the concept? Did Yungblud approach you with it, or did you come up with it together?

I would say there was certainly a lot of input from Yungblud as far as the overall vibe, I just created a lot of the setups and found a way to tie it all into the theme. Yungblud is a ball of energy and so much fun to bounce ideas with.

How did Jesse Jo Stark get involved?

Yungblud and her are friends, I suppose. We knew we wanted a girl who oozed rock and roll and had some edginess to her. She killed it and such a joy to photograph.

What is it like to work with Yungblud?

He’s the best. In every way. Being a director and getting to work with someone so energetic and passionate is what it’s all about. I love knowing he’s just as excited as me about the video and going hard from beginning to end.

Which one is your favorite scene from the video?

The boxing setup for sure. It came out exactly as I envisioned it.

What’s your favorite memory from the shoot?

All of it! It was so much fun from start to finish.

What was the hardest part of recording the video? Was there a scene that you had to reshoot over and over again?

It was honestly trying to get Cannoli the dog to participate. Yungblud is so full of energy that to anything not matching it in the scene feels out of place.

How much time did it take to shoot the video?

A standard 12 hour day.

What was the funniest blooper that happened on set?

Yungblud’s chain strap on one of the guitars broke in the middle of the take and hit the floor. The guitar was super vintage so it was like an oh shit moment.

How many strawberries did you need for the shoot?

I think I asked for 1,000 lol. We had that many.

The fans love the video very much. Are you planning to work with Yungblud in the future?

Hell yeah, man. If possible, we will shoot the whole album!

You are set to direct your first feature film El Africano this year. Can you tell us a bit about this project?

Not at the moment.

What’s your advice for aspiring directors and filmmakers?

Just keep going! Keep bettering yourself everyday, learn something new about your craft. Fail and learn from your mistakes. Nothing in this game comes easy, but don’t let that discourage you. Everybody successful was in your shoes once.
